Basic Dog Training Commands
Here are some basic dog training commands that you can teach your dog:
Sit
- Hold a treat in front of your dog's nose.
- Slowly move the treat up and over their head.
- As your dog follows the treat with their nose, their bottom should naturally go down into a sitting position.
- As soon as your dog sits, say "sit" and give them the treat.
- Repeat this process several times.
Down
- Once your dog has mastered the sit command, you can start teaching them the down command.
- Start with your dog in a sitting position.
- Hold a treat in front of their nose.
- Slowly move the treat down towards the ground, in front of their paws.
- As your dog follows the treat with their nose, their body should naturally go down into a lying position.
- As soon as your dog lies down, say "down" and give them the treat.
- Repeat this process several times.
Stay
- Once your dog has mastered the sit and down commands, you can start teaching them the stay command.
- Start with your dog in a sitting or down position.
- Hold up your hand in a "stop" gesture and say "stay."
- Take a few steps back.
- If your dog stays in position, return to them and give them a treat and praise.
- If your dog gets up, say "no" and start over.
- Gradually increase the distance you move away from your dog and the amount of time you ask them to stay.
Come
- Start with your dog on a leash.
- Say your dog's name and the command "come" in a cheerful voice.
- Gently tug on the leash to encourage your dog to come towards you.
- As soon as your dog starts to come towards you, praise them and give them a treat.
- Repeat this process several times. Once your dog is consistently coming to you on leash, you can try practicing the come command off leash in a safe and enclosed area.
Leave it
- Start with your dog on a leash.
- Place a treat on the ground in front of your dog.
- Say "leave it" and hold out your hand in a "stop" gesture.
- If your dog looks at the treat but doesn't go for it, praise them and give them a treat.
- If your dog goes for the treat, say "no" and gently pull them away from the treat.
- Repeat this process several times. Gradually increase the difficulty by placing the treat closer to your dog and by introducing distractions.
These are just a few basic dog training commands. There are many other commands that you can teach your dog, such as heel, roll over, and shake. The best way to teach your dog commands is to be patient and consistent. Use positive reinforcement, such as praise and treats, to reward your dog for good behavior. And always supervise your dog when they are training.
